Can Jewish Education Survive the Great Recession?

As the Great Recession rages with no end in sight, many Jewish Day School families have been hard hit. At the same time, Jewish philanthropy has been hit with a double whammy: Donors have lost a fortune in the stock market, while the Bernie Madoff scandal has had a devastating effect on many Jewish donors.

Not only are Jewish Day Schools dependent on tuition from a dwindling number of students, but these schools often depend on charity for their survival.

For these reasons, I believe that it is now time for completely new ways of thinking about how to ensure the survival of Jewish education.

The following are two articles I wrote. They represent diverse strategies. Both models are based on successful educational strategies that have been implemented elsewhere, but have not yet been applied to Jewish education.

At the end of each article, you are invited to comment and voice your own opinion.

1. The $5,000 Private School Tuition Plan

2. The Jewish School Magnet Program: A Model of Attraction and Financial Independence
